This National Lorry Week, the Road Haulage Association is promoting the haulage industry to local communities to help bring in the next generation of workers and get the nation to #LoveTheLorry.

With a fleet of over 900 vehicles, our drivers are responsible for keeping our national distribution network moving. Here are some of the ways we’re working to help attract new talent to the industry.

Learn and earn with apprenticeships

A career as a driver offers a varied and active role that involves travelling the country, teamwork and customer service. This makes lorry driving a great opportunity for all age groups and backgrounds, and an apprenticeship offers candidates the chance to join the industry with a structured approach to training.

The Certas Energy Apprenticeship Programme welcomes fresh faces to the industry, people who have had previous experience as a driver or even some who are looking for a career change. Throughout the programme, we support our apprentices in working towards their HGV Class 2 license, ADR license and certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) modules, all while helping them to gain the valuable experience required to be a responsible road tanker driver.

Train to gain new skills

Driving internal training and development initiatives is key to upskilling the next generation of lorry drivers as well as making sure the existing workforce is up to date with skills as required. The Certas Energy Driving Academy is dedicated to giving both new and experienced drivers the skills they need to be a best-in-class tanker driver and operate responsibly on our roads.

The Certas Energy Driving Academy provides new recruits with industry leading driver training, license renewals, access to CPC courses and external training courses such as Smith Driver Direct. To get our wider team involved in the training process, we are also developing a number of videos to cascade the best practice knowledge and experience of our talented workforce to all new drivers.

Once our drivers have graduated from the academy, we offer an additional 2.5 days of training per year to further support driver growth and development - ensuring our network operates safely and responsibly on the road.

Safety First

Health and safety is at the heart of everything we do, so we want our drivers to have the skills and the confidence to support other road users in need.

We work with road safety initiative, Driver First Assist to deliver potentially lifesaving treatment at the scene of road traffic accident. Delivered by experienced professionals from the emergency services and transport industry, the one-day road safety course equips Certas Energy employees to provide trauma first aid to assist those injured before the paramedics arrive.

An inspiring place to work

Our team members are the lifeblood of our national distribution network, so we go the extra mile to make Certas Energy an inspiring place to work and recognise our team’s efforts towards keeping our fleet moving to continuously deliver to our customers across the country.

Within our depots, we foster a real sense of camaraderie. Team members from across departments work together to support each other, sharing their expertise and experience. We also offer a flexible approach to working, with drivers able to work from a depot close to home rather than facing a lengthy commute. On the other hand, for those who prefer long-distances, the nature of our networks gives drivers the opportunity to travel across the country and visit a number of interesting localities.

“People may think that a driving job is mainly just about being on the road. But we are the ones coming face to face with the customers. It’s a really enjoyable part of the role to build relationships with them.”
