The Department for Transport (DfT) has published an updated list of feedstocks eligible under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate.
The updated renewable fuel mandate outlines which materials can be used to produce low-carbon and renewable fuels – and its aim is to support the UK’s transition towards net-zero. This is a huge boost to low-carbon fuels in the UK and shows the role renewable fuels like HVO have to play in helping fleets on their journey to reduce emissions.
What are the changes to RTFO guidance?
The RTFO feedstock list categorises materials such as products, waste, residues, renewable fuels and agricultural by-products. Now, certain wastes and residues may qualify for double rewards, receiving twice the number of Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs) per litre or kilogram of eligible fuel supplied.
The new entries include residues from ethanol production and wastewater from meat-processing plants, mirroring the Government’s commitment to incorporating innovative and low-carbon materials in fuel production.
What is the RTFO guidance in 2026?
The update is designed to give renewable fuel suppliers, producers and investors transparent guidance on how to categorise and report low-carbon feedstocks, such as HVO feedstocks. All the changes help to create safeguards around sustainability, animal-by-product regulations and compliance with greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction criteria.
You can view the full list of RTFO feedstock on the UK Government website.
What is the future of RTFO?
The DfT works closely with industry partners to responsibly expand the list of RTFO feedstocks that are eligible, making sure the environment is considered while also helping the UK’s low-carbon fuel sectors.
As an HGV driver or fleet manager, you can expect renewable fuels to become even more accessible for your fleet – especially with options like HVO, which is a no-modification needed drop-in replacement for regular diesel.
